William was born in Eriswell on the 12th November 1898 (Mildenhall Q1-1899 4A:879) son of John and Celia SNARE (nee PALMER)
1901 census... Aged 2, William George was living at Rakebottom Farm with his father John SNARE [31] a horsekeeper on farm, born Wangford; his mother Celia [26] born Eriswell; brother Henry J [3] and sister Maud E [ 3 months] both born in Eriswell. 1911 census...Aged 13 recorded as Gorge Snare he was at 81 Chamberlain's Buildings, Eriswell with his parents, brother Henry (now recorded as Jhonnie) a worker on farm, and sister Maude and a new sister, Alice [5] born in Eriswell. There had been another sibling, presumably born between Maud and Alice, but this child had died. |
He joined the Army Reserves 27/11/16 and was mobilised in the RNVR on 7/6/17. Drafted for the British Expeditionary Force on 3/12/17, he was transferred to the Nelson Battalion on 8/1/18. On the 18/1/18 he incurred ICT inflammatory connective tissue disorder) to his right hand, re-joined Anson Battalion on 28/2/18 and was killed in action on 12/3/18. His entry in De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour 1914-1924 reads:- "SNARE, WILLIAM GEORGE, Able Seamn No.1557, Nelson Battn, Royal Naval Division, s.of John Snare, of Chamberlaine Buildings, Eriswell, Horse Keeper, by his wife, Celia, dau. of Henry Palmer; b. Eriswell, co, Suffolk, 28 No.1898; educ.there; was a sailor; enlisted 17 June, 1917; served with the Expeditioary Force in France from 4 Dec. following, and was killed in action at Flesquieres Chateau 1 March, 1918. Buried there; unm. " Originally buried in Felsquieres Chateau Cemetery, those graves were concentrated in 1930 into Orival Wood Cemetery,where he now rests. |
